Kickstarting the GDG Chapter — First Session

Day One

The first session of any community sets the tone for everything that follows. For GDG On Campus Galgotias University, this was it — first event, new faces, and a lot of energy in the room.

The session was designed not to teach anything technical. The goal was simpler: introduce who we are, what GDG stands for, and why this community is worth showing up for.

What We Did

Welcome and introductions — Leadership team introduced themselves and their backgrounds. Not résumés — what got them into tech and what they're working on right now.

What is GDG? — Google Developer Groups are one of the most globally active developer communities. We explained the chapter structure, the connection to Google, and what being part of GDG actually unlocks: events, workshops, Google Cloud credits, DevFest, and more.

Our year ahead — Mapped out what we were planning: Cloud Study Jams, AI workshops, hackathons, guest talks. Gave people a reason to stay engaged beyond this first event.

Open Q&A — The most valuable part. Students asked about internship guidance, which technologies to learn, how to contribute to open source. Real questions.

The Feeling

There's something specific about first sessions that's hard to replicate later in the year. Everyone is genuinely curious and not yet jaded about "another event." Holding that energy and delivering something useful from it is the challenge.

This one felt like it worked.
